30 days to lose a client
You know the client who doesn’t come back?
The one who just drifts off.
And you never quite know why.
I used to think it happened at the end.
It doesn’t.
After enough years doing this, I can tell you exactly when they decided.
And it’s a lot earlier than you’d guess.
They decided in the first couple of weeks.
You just didn’t hear about it for months.
(I made you a little checklist for this, by the way. The moves that keep a new client from ever getting there. It’s yours to download with one click, no forms to fill.)

So let me tell you what I mean.
Think back to the last time someone signed with you.
They were happy.
A little relieved, even.
And underneath all that – just a bit nervous they’d picked the wrong firm.
That nervousness is the whole thing.
It doesn’t go away on its own.
Those first few weeks either put it to rest, or let it grow into a regret they can’t quite name.
And this is the part that surprised me.
We’re so heads-down doing great work that we miss what the client is actually feeling.
They’re not admiring the work.
They’re wondering, in the back of their mind, “did I make the right call?”
Your whole job in those first thirty days is to answer that.
Out loud.
Before they answer it themselves – and answer it wrong.

It’s honestly not complicated.
It’s mostly just paying attention when it counts.
A warm hello from a real person, not an automated “we got your inquiry.”
A quick early win, so they feel something happening.
A clear “here’s what’s next,” so they’re not sitting in silence.
One person who’s clearly theirs, so they never feel handed off.
None of that is hard.
We just don’t do it.
Because we figure once they’ve signed, the nervous part is over.
For them, it’s only just starting.

I think of it like the early days of any relationship.
Same thing here.
A client who feels looked-after in month one is a client who’s still with you in year three.
Sending referrals.
Never quite remembering why they trust you so much.
(It’s just this. That you showed up early. That’s what makes them trust you so much.)

So here’s my nudge for the week.
Look at what actually happens in your first thirty days with a new client.
Not what you think happens.
What really does.
I’d bet you’ll find a few small gaps.
Little moments where a client could slip away, and neither of you would notice till it’s too late.
I put the whole thing on one page so you don’t have to hold it in your head.
Every move that turns a nervous new client into one who sticks around for years.
Download it, there’s no form to fill.
Use it with your team.
Make it yours.
