Waiting for what?

Waiting for what?
You had a great call with a prospect last week.
They were in. You could feel it.
“Send the proposal,” they said.
You sent it that afternoon.
Then you waited.
Politely.
Professionally.
Giving them room.
Then three days passed.

In your mind, the ball was in their court.
You’d done your part; you were letting them decide.
What you didn’t know is that they were waiting too.
Not for the proposal.
They had that.
They were waiting to feel chosen.
To feel like the firm they were about to trust actually wanted the work.
Same three days of silence.
To you, it was patience.
To them, it was a warning sign.
By Friday, the deal you’d won was gone.
And you never knew why.

This is the pattern almost nobody maps.
At every step, your client expects something.
At every step, you deliver something slightly different.
And the distance between the two is where good firms lose clients they already earned.
Watch how far apart the two stories drift.
You think you’re giving them space.
They think you disappeared.
You think the proposal speaks for itself.
They think you don’t want it.
You think the project is finished.
They think this is where it gets good.
You think no news is fine.
They read silence as proof they don’t matter.
Every one of those is a client silently deciding something about you.
While you have no idea the decision is being made.
That’s the trap.

Nobody announces an expectation.
They just hold it.
Feel it go unmet.
And drift.
No complaint.
No confrontation.
No chance for you to fix it.
Just a deal that cools.
Or a client who doesn’t come back.
For a reason you’ll never be able to name.
And it’s almost never the work.
The work is the one thing you obsess over.
So the work is usually great.
The damage happens in everything around it.
The spaces you’re not watching, because you assume silence means everything’s fine.

So this week, one exercise.
Walk your client journey stage by stage.
Inquiry.
Call.
Proposal.
Signing.
Kickoff.
Delivery.
Wrap.
At each one, stop asking the question firms always ask – “what do we do here?”
Ask the one that actually matters:
What is the client expecting us to do here?
And does it match what we actually do?
Every mismatch is a leak.
Not a competitor stealing them.
Not bad work driving them off.
Just the silent distance between what they hoped for and what they got.

The firms that feel effortless to hire have cracked exactly one thing.
They know what the client expects at each step.
And they deliver it before the client has to ask.
That’s it.
That’s the whole edge.
They see the expectation the client never says out loud.
And they meet it first.
Your work is already good enough.
You won’t find the growth you’re missing in better work.
It’s hiding in the gaps around it.
The moments where what your client expected and what you delivered slowly pulled apart.
Find those gaps this week.
Close them.
Watch what stops slipping away. 😊
